All the modules allow you the flexibility to pick and choose. You may choose to participate in any of the modules of your liking only. To complete the Certificate you need to attend all modules.

Course fees: One day workshop $100, 2 day workshop $180 - payable to the module contact person. Deposit of half of the fee necessary to make a reservation. No refund if a cancellation comes later then 5 working days before start of the course.

Module 1 & 2 Permaculture Philosophy and Design
You will learn about the ethics, principles, methods and concepts of design in Permaculture. We will explore the ideas of an ecological sustainable future based on Permaculture design. We will look at the landscape and show you how to read the patterns, how to identify where to put your house or access or dam and what to watch out for.
9 & 10 February 2008 at the Otamatea Eco Village with Sabine Drückler and Wolfgang Hiepe. For enrolment please contact Sabine 09 431 2231 or pukahu@xtra.co.nz Also on 6 & 7 September 2008

Module 7 Orchards and Small Animals
You will explore the concept of zones and design the appropriate systems. How to design an orchard and how to improve an existing one and how to integrate the small animals like chicken, ducks and pigs? It is important to plant the right fruit tree into the right environment or create that environment, to choose the small animals appropriate for your system. It is also important to know about the needs of the animals and make sure you can provide for them. We will share ideas and design principles and show you how it can look in reality.
23 & 24February 2008 at Otamatea Eco Village with Heidelind Luschberger, Sabine Drückler, Wolfgang Hiepe and Marijke Valkenburg. For enrolment please contact Sabine 09 431 2231 or pukahu@xtra.co.nz

Module 8 Large Animals & Forestry
We will look at animal husbandry, how to appropriately care and design for cattle, sheep and other large animals. We explore the use of woodlots including organic methods of site preparation and management through the establishment period, pest control and the use of livestock in management. We will talk about old management models like coppicing and other sustainable uses of woodlands and explore and experience the importance of leaving wilderness areas.
8 & 9 March 2008 at the Otamatea Eco Village with Wolfgang Hiepe, Heidelind Luschberger, Daniel Tohill and John Aiken. For enrolments please contact Heidelind 09 4132887 or heidelind@ihug.co.nz

Module 9 The Built Environment
There is an abundance of examples and different approaches out at the eco village how to design and build environmentally friendly houses using very different building materials. Permaculture design teaches you the principles of building ecology, orientation of the house and lay out, making the most of using passive solar design and local materials wherever possible. But also where does your water come from and where does your grey water go? Some houses have dry composting toilets others have vermicasters. You will have a chance to also see the different houses and talk to their owners/builders who are the teachers of this module.
12 & 13 April 2008 at Otamatea Eco Village with Marijke Valkenberg, Robert Ter Veer, Rik Schijf. For enrolment please contact Marijke 09 4312656 or Send Marijke a message

Module 10 Urban Living This one day workshop looks at sustainable ideas for retrofitting cities—for urban agriculture, alternatives to suburbia, generating local energy production, creating resource recovery centres, and creating a stronger link between city and country.
date and place to be advised with Ron Sperber

Module 11 & 12 Invisible Structures and Hazards Acknowledging the hazards and planning accordingly to reduce the resulting risks is an important part of our rapidly changing world and environment. Permaculture design explores the hazards like flood, droughts, earthquake etc and designs to cope with it. This also involves the social aspects and what can be done. The invisible structures (financial, social and political systems) that we have around us can easily get forgotten, this workshop is aiming at making you aware of them. We will also explore how good design for resilient self sufficient communities is showing the way into the future.
19 & 20 April 2008 at Otamatea Eco Village with Sabine Drückler, Wolfgang Hiepe and Joe Polaischer. For enrolment please contact Sabine 09 – 431 2231 or pukahu@xtra.co.nz

Module 4 Macro & Micro Climate
Different climate zones require different approaches to the way we live. In this module we will explore what happens in the tropical, arid and cold climate and how Permaculture design works here. We will look at how trees effect the climate, how you can create micro climates, suntraps, heat sinks and many more concepts. How does housing change according to the climate, which features work well, what to consider.
3 May 2008 at the Otamatea Eco Village with Rik Schijf and Klaus Lotz. For enrolments please contact Rik 09 4132887 or schijf@ihug.co.nz

Module 5 Water & Water harvesting
A practical approach to understanding water, identifying its sources, analyzing for quality and quantity, siting for tanks, dams and swales. Understand the pathways of water and slope benefits, fish ladders, and basic aquaculture in your pond. We will be spending half a day in the classroom looking at the theory, half a day walking the land observing different types of water harvesting and use, positioning of water storage areas etc.
10 May 2008 at the Otamatea Eco Village with Daniel Tohill and Heidelind Luschberger. For enrolments please contact Daniel 09 4312577 or daniel.tohill@actrix.co.nz

Water Journey The day will be spent in a boat on the Kaipara Harbour, observing its huge catchment area and the effects of water on the harbour’s natural environment. Places are limited, Permaculture certificate students have priority for this field trip.
11 May 2008 with Daniel Tohill and Peter Yardley. For enrolments please contact Daniel 09 4312577 or daniel.tohill@actrix.co.nz

Module 6 Energy & Technology Learn how to become more self reliant in energy and technology. Explore the feasibility of bio fuels. See practical examples of appropriate technology in action (alternative power system, solar hot water, wood stoves, hand operated washing machine). We will demonstrate ‘Green Woodworking’ which is an appropriate technology for utilising wood and local timber resources. A range of possible products from woodlands includes: fuel/fire wood, building materials, fencing materials, tool handles, furniture & other household products.
16 August 2008 at Otamatea Eco Village with Wolfgang Hiepe and John Aiken. For enrolments please contact Wolfgang 09 4132231 or pukahu@xtra.co.nz

Module Design Project It is a requirement for obtaining the Permaculture Certificate to make a design of a property of your choice. To complete the design work we offer a 2 day workshop where experienced Permaculture teachers will support you to complete your design.
